Duinlandschap, Dune Landscape, marked Mondrian as a skilled landscape painter early in the 20th century.

The early works of Mondrian were dominated by landscape paintings, inspired by the Dutch countryside local to where he was living at that time. It was Zeeland where he produced this dune landscape, and there were many more sea based paintings from this region. The colours and modernist style of Mondrian can already been seen here, but it was still some way from the abstract approach which appeared later on. Despite that, there is still some clue here as to the direction that his style was developing, when compared to his pointilist work of several years previous.

Duinlandschap communicates the atmosphere found in this unique location - peace, beauy and tranquility. It also ranks as one of his most famous landscape paintings, alongside his series of trees and windmills. View from the Dunes with Beach and Piers by Piet Mondrian is also strongly related to this artwork, though came earlier.
